Sunroom HVAC Maintenance Tips for Consistent Temperature Control

Building a sunroom at home is one of the most worthwhile investments that you can make. Not only does a sunroom allow you to warm yourself in the warm sunshine during the cooler months of the year, it also provides unspoiled views outdoors, with the added bonus of providing an extra room in your home, and increasing its value at the same time.

Despite sunrooms providing additional warmth during the cooler fall and winter months, they can get pretty chilly at times. Because they also feature larger glass doors, windows, and even ceilings, during the hot summer months they may also become uncomfortably hot as well. This is where it pays to have a functional and efficient HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) system in place.

HVAC systems in sunrooms are worth their weight in gold for many, as long as they’re working as they should. Like anything else in the home, in order to keep them working correctly they do need regular maintenance.

Here are some sunroom HVAC maintenance tips for consistent temperature control.

Clean Vents Regularly

One of the simplest and most effective ways of prolonging the life of your HVAC system and keeping it functional and efficient is to clean the vents regularly.

Cleaning the vents of your HVAC system is not only a great way of eliminating dust and potential allergens, it’s also important for hygiene reasons as the last thing you want is to be blowing germs and bacteria into the room due to dirty and unsanitary vents.

Arguably the most important reason for regularly cleaning your vents however, is to ensure adequate airflow throughout your sunroom. If the vents are clogged with dirt, dust, pet dander, and other pieces of detritus, the air won’t be able to circulate sufficiently and the temperature in your sunroom simply won’t be consistent. In the winter, that means it may be too cold, and in the summer, it could be too warm.

You don’t need to deep clean them each time, but try to use a damp cloth and anti-bacterial cleaning solution once or twice a year. Monthly, or even weekly, try to use a soft-bristled brush, a feather duster, or a vacuum cleaner to remove dust and debris from the vents to ensure they don’t become blocked or clogged.

Inspect Your Thermostat Settings According to the Seasons

Another handy tip for keeping your HVAC system in full working order is to inspect your thermostat according to the seasons of the year.

Remember, one of the goals here is to achieve consistent temperatures throughout the year. That does not mean flooding your sunroom with hot air in the winter and freezing cold air during the summer. The objective is to attain consistent and comfortable temperatures throughout the year.

In early fall for example, you’ll likely want to bump the target temperature up a few degrees as the weather will soon be turning colder. On the other side of the coin, in late spring you’ll likely want to turn the target temp down as warmer, sunnier weather should be right around the corner.

Ensure You Change Air Filters

If you really want to ensure sufficient airflow, circulation, and quality, it’s important that you regularly change your air filters and keep them free of dirt, dust, and general debris.

Once you’ve located the slot where the filter is found, carefully remove it and check its condition. It could just require a gentle clean, or it may need replacing with a fresh new one.

Before you remove your air filter, make sure you know how to replace it, and make sure you get the correct sized replacements. Depending upon the air quality in your sunroom, and where you live, we recommend that you replace your air filters every 6 – 12 weeks. Try to clean them once a month at least.

Check for Signs of Damage or General Wear and Tear

As we’re talking about general HVAC maintenance, it’s also important to inspect your HVAC system regularly to check for any signs of damage or general wear and tear.

You don’t need to go everything with a magnifying glass and inspect every nook and cranny, but check inlets, vents, valves, registers, ducting, and condenser units and look at the condition that they’re in. If you can see any signs of damage, or if a certain part is looking or sounding worn or damaged, try to replace or repair it before the problem gets worse.

It’s also a good idea to take photos of the different parts each time you carry out an inspection. That way you can compare them to see whether everything is as it should be.

Clear Away any Loose Debris in Outdoor Units

If your HVAC system features an outdoor unit, to ensure that the air is able to flow and circulate sufficiently it’s important to clear away any loose debris that could be causing an obstruction.

Common culprits include grass clippings, spider’s webs, fallen leaves, and overgrown vegetation. Switch off the power and inspect the unit for any debris which could restrict airflow or be causing a blockage.

Check Doors and Windows for Leaks or Damaged Seals

While doors and windows don’t officially make up a part of your HVAC unit, they do still play an essential role in regulating the temperature of your lovely sunroom.

To help ensure your sunroom is at a comfortable and consistent temperature, check the seals of your doors and windows and look for signs of damage or leaks. If water is able to get in via a leak, so too will be cold air in winter, and warm air in the summer. Not only that, it means that cold air can escape in the summer, and warm air can escape in the winter.

Inspect your doors and windows for leaks or damaged seals, and if you do find anything, be sure to rectify it as soon as you can.
